Creature Café
Creature Café is a cosy game where you run a café for other creatures, talking to them and trying to serve up just the right foods and drinks to make them feel happy and at home.
WASD – Move & Menus
Space – Interact (Everything else)
Created for the GameDev.tv 2026 Game Jam around the theme of connections, Creature Café has you play as the cat proprietor of a café, serving other creatures with their own stories, establishing connections with them and allowing them to connect with each other. Rather than them ordering, you will have to learn their preferences through chatting to them, and choosing the right items will help boost your connection. Drawing inspiration from Studio Ghibli films and Mai Mochizuki's book 'The Full Moon Coffee Shop,' this is my first attempt both at a hand-drawn visual style for a game and a slightly more narratively-focused experience. Artistically, I drew inspiration primarily from a selection of different web comics I follow. Most notably, I based the designs and personalities for the alligator father and son on the excellent Gator Days comic by FieldExplores (https://www.instagram.com/fieldexplores) which I greatly enjoy.
All of the code and art was created by me during the jam, with the exception of my Godot jam project template which I host at https://github.com/CreatedBySeb/godot-jamjar
Gameplay Hints
Show/Hide
- You can interact with the Coffee Machine to make drinks, or the Fridge Cabinet to get food
- If you accidentally make/pick up something you don't want or can't use, you can dispose of it in the trash
- Characters all have multiple lines of dialogue per 'connection level', so talk to them multiple times to learn their preferences
- Picking a bad option has a penalty, so if you're not sure you should play it safe, there will always be at least 1 dialogue that gives you an indication of what you can order to increase the connection
- The first time you talk to a customer each visit you will also boost the connection
